Well, the New Year started off with a real bang. Harry got his legs on some fireworks and set them off promptly at midnight, to the great merriment of his fellow party animals--two chipmunks, Laptop the cat, ten millipedes (really productive knitters), and a confused possum who wandered in looking for directions to another party.
Unfortunately, Roy and I were fast asleep...at least until the fireworks went off in the living room. Then there was fifteen minutes of chasing the menagerie into the basement, a bit of screaming and yelling, threatening with a can of Raid, and so on. Just a typical evening here at chez fleegle.
On New Year's Day, Harry presented me with his newest creations (actually, he didn't present them--he threw them at me):
Eggs? He wouldn't tell me what they were, being in a real snit over the fireworks fiasco. Guess we'll find out what he has in mind later on.
As I was enjoying a Harry-free cup of coffee, I happened upon these lovely items in a Travelsmith catalog:
They look to be the perfect wardrobe accoutrement--a sweater/shawl/scarf/microskirt/spider swatter. If I could figure out the shape, it might be kinda fun to design a lacy version. Has anyone seen this design in a knitting publication? I have this picture of a wool/silk sweater with matching mohair shawl wings. Sounds like a project tailor-made for Lisa Souza yarn...
If you would maybe look at the cover of the Knitters, maybe you could corrupt, er, re-design that one. It has a draped area feeding through a slot on the front, but maybe the shaping could be adjusted and turned to fit your vision. I love the photo and think a silky yarn with maybe a bit of holographic fiber...
ReplyDeleteGood Luck
I have something very similar, and they are knit side to side with the fronts extended. There is a similar patter in on the Bond Ultimate Sweater machine site (called draped cardigan), but on my cardigan, the fronts are just long rectagles, placed horizontally. Contact me if you want a link.
ReplyDeleteCosmicpluto also has a pattern - but I would further extend the fronts.
ReplyDeleteHere's a link to Glad from Rowan 39...almost exactly what you describe.

I actually really, really like the red one. Like a toga, except I might be able to get away with wearing it to work!
ReplyDeleteWell, glad to know someone was having fun ringing in the new year - I was in bed early with a head-cold...
ReplyDeleteCurious to see what those white spheres are - Harry is always up to something interesting!
As for the sweater - I'm not sure, but it sort of looks like a plain t-shirt shape, with an attached sari-type drape on it. I'll be very interested to see if you can figure it out.
not quite but I am emailing a couple of pictures of something that might give you an idea of how to design it
ReplyDeletethose look like spiders eggs to me Harry x 1000?
Those designs look so much like the Yoga Wrap (which is lacy by the way) which was published in Vogue Knitting magazine--Winter 2005 I think. I'm wearing mine as we speak and was just thinking another one might be in order. Very easy knit--side to side--bind off for arm holes, cast on sleeves knit separately, of course.
ReplyDeletecan't help with the pattern but it does look rather nice....
ReplyDeleteThe Stitch Diva has a pattern for a Cardi Wrap here:

Two patterns come to mind-- a Rebecca wrap originally published in mohair, similar to kid silk haze. The pattern was free online for at least a year, so you might still find it at the Rebecca site. (knit in Fisherman's rib.)
ReplyDeleteThe second pattern is probably a better fit-- a Vittadini pattern published in a Winter Vogue magazine-- perhaps 2 winters ago? The model sweater was knit in brown. It has a simple lace texture.
I think you should just order one and when you have taken a good look-see, return it. I'm curious as all getout myself. It's attractive.
ReplyDeleteSuss Cousin also did a very similar design in the Weddings book in lace. Though the jacket was much shorter the drap of the front was lovely. 978-0-307-34640-7
ReplyDeleteHope you soon find out what the white balls are for.
Unless Harry has a girlfriend, I'm afraid our little spider guy might just be a hermaphrodite if you catch my drift. That top from Travelsmith looks great but I'm not sure how they constructed it. It really just might be the old rectangle with holes for arms type of thing that is just draped well. Would look fab in lace :-)
ReplyDeleteThreads magazine's April/May 2007 has directions by Anna Mazur to sew this in a knit material. She calls it a Cardi-Wrap and shows multiple ways to wear it. Directions include a better fitting armhole than the usual leave-a-slit method. This would be an easy pattern to convert to handknitting. You will need to borrow a sleeve pattern with a cap sleeve (not drop shoulder) from another project, however. The issue of Threads is available on the Taunton Press website, or perhaps your local library has it available as well.
ReplyDeleteFleegle, this pattern has a schematic that should help in designing your own.

ReplyDeleteHmmm, maybe you should get some fireworks of you rown, wait till Harry is asleep and then...BANG! The wheel turns...
ReplyDeletewhile reading your blog I fell madly in love with your Black Widow Spider Queen. does the offer to share the instructions and charts still stand? If so I would love to tackle this baby. pdf would be best for me if possible.
ReplyDeleteBYW I think the shawl/scarf/spider swater thing is just a huge rectangle with sleeves in it. I made one a while back see it at http://community.webshots.com/user/busyneedlescan but after taking the pictures I frogged it. It didn't drape well.yarn had mohair in it. If I did another one i'd use a fine silky yarn. I'll look for the pattern or link and send it as soon as I find it. sure enjoy your work. Happy Knitting jr
ps It might have been a drops design.
