Presto Change-o!

A long, long time ago I acquired a full set of Holz & Stein ebony dpns. With the advent of flexible, pointy circulars, I have zero use for dpns, no matter how lovely. These needles are really beautiful--smooth and richly dark--and I have both 4" and 7" sets.

The other day I was rummaging in my stash closet and rediscovered them tucked forlornly inside my needle roll. The little brain cells began crunching possibilities. A bit more rummaging turned up some Clover circulars that I never use.

A bit of twisting, a bit of glue...and presto, a handsome ebony circular!

In other news...

I am now wending my way down the third side of the Black Widow Spider King and am on row 71 of Lyra. I haven't been setting my needles on fire lately, as there have been some distracting personal issues taking my attention.

Not one to whine about personal problems inside a knitting blog, I do think, however, that everyone can enjoy a laugh at my expense.

Last week, our Japanese orthopedist and his wife paid us a four-day visit, which, among other strenuous activities, included a whole lot of cooking. After heaving gigantic, heavy pans filled with gigantic, heavy turkey and spare ribs, in and out of our awkwardly placed ovens, I managed to herniate three cervical disks.

There is no doubt in my mind that if I ever find myself cooking for my American orthopedist, the meal will include featherweight dishes such as a single potato chip accompanied by a neatly sliced olive. Low calorie, too!

  1. Hurting your back cooking for your orthopedist, that is just not right. I hope you never cook for a cardiologist.

  2. You are too dangerous to cook for others! You are forbidden ever to do that again! That said, you are a clever clever girl for transplanting those beautiful needles onto the cables. I look forward to seeing your progress on Spider since I have not started my border on that yet. I had to pick back 4 rows of Lyra because I found a mistake:-( but now I'm back up to row 165. Soo blew past all of us LOL. Take care of your back. No limbo for you for awhile.

  3. Nice job on those needles.
Too bad about the cooking injury. I don't know how serious a herniated disc (or three) is, but I hope the damage is reversible. In any case, you should have someone else do *everything* around the house for while. :)

  4. Orthopedic injuries while cooking for the orthopod must be against the rules; It just must be. Three discs? Very bad form. I am with Muki Muki. Please do not cook for your cardiologist. Knit lace instead, eh?

  6. Ouch! I hope you feel better soon - that sort of injury makes everything difficult!
I love the circular needle "facelift." A great idea!

  7. Sorry to hear about your back. Did you at least get an instant diagnosis? I love the 'new' ebony needles.

  10. Bless your heart! Hope you feel better soon. Another reason to add to "why I'd rather knit than cook." I'm sure Harry is laughing his little legs off--unless he's realized this means you can't pick up boxes of yarn to post them to him.

  11. Dear Lori--

Harry is right here. He does pretty good neck massages, although his leg hairs tickle. I suggested he shave is legs, but he didn't take well to the suggestion.

  12. OUCH! Be careful and have the DH do the lifting if possible.

Will you need surgery? (Hope not!) Prayers, healing thoughts, etc heading your way.

And I LOVE the needle point transplant. Aren't you the clever one. No gunsmith needed!

Don't worry about personal stuff on the knitting blog. I love hearing about my knitting pals personal stuff, too.

  13. So clever to make your own H&S circs! my 1 pair of them is only 16"long but what a smooth, silky join they have.
I'll never ask you to cook for me, I'm a cancer researcher. Get well soon.

  14. What a great idea. I still use dpn's -- probably more out of my stubborn nature than necessity...

    Take care of you back.

  15. Thanks so much for posting the photo of the needles. I can not believe how well they turned out.

Hope you are feeling better today.

  17. ouch, ouch, ouch!!! (one for each vertebrae). Do take good care of your back, these things can take a long time to heal. Good thing lace is not heavy to lift :} Clever you with the ebony needles - off to find the DPN's I never use either.

    Mmmwahhh - be well!

  18. Yikes, poor you. Maybe you'd best rest your back and just sit a bit and knit .... edgings. :-)

    (Heal well and quickly!)

  21. Oh Fleegle - quelle doleur!! (hope I spelled that correctly - me and my french phrases!!)You poor thing - I'm sure there's a moral there somewhere - I agree entirely with muki muki's comment - Ha Ha (sorry!)Just reassuring you that Harry managed to escape being mishandled by Cressida - Troilus came to his rescue but was a little put out that she showed more interest in Harry than in him!!Love those Ebony circs - what a clever idea!! Hope you feel better now!

  22. I would definitely give up cooking after that. I hope you're feeling better soon.
And the dpn-to-circ transformation is perfect. Though I'd have taken those dpn's off your hands for you. I love H&S needles.

  27. Dear Rich--
I want them in all sizes too! I have bagged them up to take to the gunsmith to see if he can work a miracle with them.
